FAQs

Most of the big supermarkets stock our products:

Ambrosia, Bruno’s Fine Foods, Buy Low Foods, ChoicesMarkets, Denningers, Fairway Markets, Federated Co-op, Food Basics, FreshCo, Highland Farms, IGA, Independent Grocers, Loblaws, London Drugs, Longo’s, Metro, Nesters, Overwaitea, PharmaPlus, Quality Foods, Rexall, Safeway, Sobeys, Thrifty Foods, Walmart, Whole Foods and Zehrs.

Although we would love every single one of their stores to have all of our products on their shelves – unfortunately they are simply not able to do this.

In some of our baked cereals and cereal bar products, we use a small quantity of rapeseed oil and palm oil that has been blended together. We use the absolute minimum amount of palm oil needed to ensure our products stay fresh for the longest possible period of time. As a natural food company with over 30 years experience, we have developed an optimal combination of natural ingredients to ensure our products stay fresh, without having to rely on artificial preservatives. We are now able to use 100% Certified Sustainable Palm Oil thanks to the opening of a new palm oil ‘refinery’ in the UK that will only use Certified Sustainable Palm Oil from Papua New Guinea. This means that we are able to guarantee that we will only use sustainable palm oil in all our cereals and cereal bars from the end of June 2010. Jordans has been a member of the Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) since 2006 – which aims to bring together businesses and environmentalists to promote sustainable palm oil production methods. We also purchased Green Palm certificates for 100% of our palm oil supply to ensure that Certified Sustainable Palm Oil was being produced and used instead of non-sustainable oil palm – even though at that stage we could not guarantee it was in our products. As a business that is also committed to supporting wildlife, we share the very real concerns of many environmentalists regarding the ecological consequences of rainforest deforestation for palm oil production. This is a complex issue involving not only the loss of habitat for the Orangutan and Sumatran tiger, but also the needs of indigenous rural populations and small holders who, to a large extent, are supported by the palm oil industry.

November 2011: In the recent WWF Palm Oil Buyers Scorecard 2011 which assesses the buying practices of major companies, Jordans & Ryvita Company scored a maximum of 9 points. The Palm Oil Buyers’ Scorecard 2011 measured the performance of 132 major retailers and consumer goods manufacturers against four areas which show whether or not these companies are acting responsibly:

  • Being an active member of the RSPO;

  • Making a public commitment to RSPO-certified sustainable palm oil;

  • Disclosing how much palm oil they use;

  • Showing how much of the palm oil they source is RSPO-certified.

Our Conservation Grade™ farmers commit to taking 10% of their land out of food production to create a number of specific wildlife habitats that are designed to work together to increase the overall biodiversity of the farm. They plant wild flower edges around their fields for bees, insects and butterflies to feed on; sow seed growing crops to provide foods for birds over winter, and put up boxes for owls and bats. Conservation Grade™ farming is recognized by leading environmental organizations such as the RSPB and is endorsed by ‘Green’ campaigners such as Professor David Bellamy.

We guarantee that none of our products contain any GM products. We audit our supply chain and are particularly aware of any GM issue crops.
